Makeup Brush Guide

A Few Additional Tips About Makeup Brushes

Powder and Blush Brushes

If you only have one powder brush you can use it for pressed and loose powder, bronzer, and blush. But I like using my powder brush just for powder and I have a separate blush brush for blush and bronzer.  I also have a contoured blush brush because the slanted shape allows you to deposit color precisely where you want it.

Travel Brush Sets

Having a separate travel set of brushes is ideal because it is compact and the brushes are neatly organized. I have a Bobbi Brown travel brush set I use (similar to this one) but this Rose Gold Mineral Brush Set from Sephora is stunning and I love the chic coordinated pouch.

Keeping Brushes Clean

Cleaning and disinfection brushes is important not only to protect the longevity of the brushes but also to keep your skin healthy and free of bacteria. I admit I am terrible when it comes to cleaning my makeup brushes but I am hoping to get better at this with at least monthly deep cleaning of the brushes with baby shampoo. I also just purchased  this anti-bacterial daily cleaner from Sephora and it works well to quickly remove makeup between applications.

Do It Yourself! Homemade Lip Balm

A great way to keep your lips moisturized during the summer, and it’s inexpensive!

__________________________________________________

First, get together your tools… You’ll need:

.Vaseline or Un-Petroleum Jelly

.Crystal Light - I’ve used Cherry Pomegranate, though any would work as long as it’s not green or  blue (we don’t want to look like corpses!) Basically pinks, reds or even purples would be great (Kool-Aid works great as well though it’s a bit more tart)

.A small container (hello dollar store!), and a mixing tool, I like to use a q-tip.

Now for the super simple creation process:

.Fill the empty small container with your Un-Petroleum Jelly.

.Add your Crystal Light, I used about 1/3 of the individual packet.

.Now, the really tricky part (ha ha).  Mix it all together.

I know you want to slap that delicious looking stuff right on your kisser, but you need to allow this to sit for about an hour so any granules can dissolve. The color will get much more vibrant, and it will become smoother. Then, you are ready to stain those lips!

This great tasting lip balm will not only hydrate dry lips, it’ll also stain your lips softly for hours making it a great summer treat!

Do It Yourself Eye Makeup Remover!

Eye make-up remover is so darn expensive!
Here is a quick and cheap DIY Eye Make-up Remover recipe.
If you have kids, you’ll have the materials!
If you don’t… and you have to buy ingredients,
well, you’ll spend less than 3 dollars!
And get at least 30 bottles of remover.

Ingredients:
1 C water
1½ TBSP Baby Shampoo (tear free)
⅛ TSP Baby Oil
(Cocunut Oil or Olive Oil) EDIT! Due to the overwhelming response to my use of Baby Oil. Please Note: Some say you should not use Baby Oil on your face, others say you should not use it period. If you are worried about it’s effects, just use Coconut Oil or Olive Oil.

Materials:
Mixing Bowl
Measuring cup/spoons
Bottle to put finished product in
(I used an empty medicine bottle; an empty baby oil bottle would work GREAT)
Small funnel (to pour into bottles)

Directions:
Combine ingredients, stir, then pour into a sealable container. Enjoy!

How to clean your Makeup brushes

Mix a tablespoon of white vinegar in a cup with hot water. Swish the brush around and let soak for a bit. Rinse out your brushes with lukewarm water, squeeze out the excess water, and make sure they are smoothed out into their original form. Lay your brushes on a towel flat or over the sink to dry overnight. Repeat process every 2 to 4 weeks.

Disinfects, dissolves grease/makeup, leaves no film, and inexpensive.
